Time is cruel to your hardware, especially expensive graphics cards. All glory is fleeting: after a while, even mighty leaders like Nvidia's once unstoppable GTX Titan move from first place to shabby and outdated, making way for the best graphics cards of the next generation. The upgrade cycle is relentless, but there are alternatives to busting your budget on a new GPU every single generation. You can make your current graphics card faster, and potentially get dramatically better performance out of it, by overclocking.

Pushing a CPU to 5GHz yields mostly benchmark bragging rights when it comes to gaming, but a good graphics card overclock delivers more frames per second and does so with less hardware hassle. While these techniques can be used with most current graphics cards, Nvidia's GTX Ti FE was used here to see if a hotrod boost can put yesterday's best back at the front of the pack.

Here's our step-by-step guide to overclocking your graphics card. It's all being made possible by Razerwhich stepped up to support this months-long project. Thanks, Razer! If you're looking to overclock a card you've already installed, then it's probably time to crack the case and clean up in there. Make sure cables are routed clear of fans and don't obstruct case airflow. If the card itself has gotten dusty, carefully blow it clean with a can of compressed air. If you opt to remove the card for a full clean-up and overhaul, don't forget to release the locking tab at the forward edge of the slot that secures the card to the motherboard.

While the case is open, it's also wise to check and make sure the current power supply is up to the task ahead. Overclocked hardware pulls power beyond normal design specifications and if you're just squeaking by with watts to spare, you'll need to upgrade to handle the additional load or risk hard-to-pinpoint stability problems.

But recent hardware generations have largely grown more power efficient, so anything but the bare minimum PSU is likely to give you plenty of headroom for an overclock.

In the unlikely event you do need a new, higher-rated PSU, take comfort in the fact that you'd be doing this for almost any serious upgrade or CPU overclock. After clean-up is done, update the graphics drivers to make sure all the latest bug fixes and stability enhancements are in place. Occasionally, motherboard firmware updates that further improve stability or performance are also available.

Consider installing these as well, to give your system a fresh foundation for your overclocking adventures. Good news: overclocking your graphics card is actually really easy, and you don't even need to leave Windows to do it! Manufacturer-specific overclocking software exists, but most veteran PC enthusiasts stick to a few trusted packages that have been around for a while and work on most graphics cards no matter who makes them.

MSI's venerable Afterburner is the best place to start when it comes to overclocking your graphics card. In addition to a long history of stable releases, Afterburner is simple to use and provides a few extras including a built-in temperature graph along with voltage and real time clock speed monitoring tools.

Now it's time to test the hardware and see how well your card currently performs.Home Discussions Workshop Market Broadcasts. Change language. Install Steam. The 60 watt regulation limits how much you can effectively overclock it because when that kicks in it may start dropping frames before you reach a point of getting artifacts.

But I usually did not bother with that because it only gained a few fps.

And try raising both Core and Memory; not just one or the other. Avoid raising Voltage. Per page: 15 30 Date Posted: 4 Jul, am. Posts: 5. Start a New Discussion. Discussions Rules and Guidelines. If you are getting less than this then you are suffering from low GPU usage problem, which ultimately means less FPS and lower performance in games.

GTX 1080 Help (constantly hitting power limit 1)

There are many factors that can cause low GPU usage, depending upon the system configuration and drivers you have. It also means that there are both hardware and software factors involved in lower GPU utilization of your graphics card. So, here in this post, I am going to list all the causes and it fixes for low GPU usage. Here are the top software and hardware related problems for low GPU usage with their appropriate fix.

It means that you have an under-powered CPU that is not able to keep up with your graphics card performance. If you have a powerful CPU and still the GPU usage is also not at maximum then you have other issues, which you can check out below. This will cause your GPU to work more and it will have much higher utilization than before. It can be possible that you are getting high usage on two cores only, and others are just not used at all.

Video drivers also contribute a lot to this low GPU usage problem. It is also important to note that the latest drivers are not always better, as I have experienced this many times with my graphics card in the latest games. So, if you have the latest graphics card drivers installed and getting low GPU usage then you can roll back to previous drivers, and see if the problem goes away or not. Also, if you have older drivers installed then you can install the latest ones and monitor the GPU usage.

Here I would also like to add that if a particular driver works best for your GPU then it is not certain that it will also deliver the best performance for other GPUs. For example, I get the best performance in games with Forceware If I install the latest drivers then I do notice lower performance and stuttering, even in the latest games. One another thing you should always keep in mind before installing video drivers, you have to completely uninstall previous drivers using DDU or Display Driver Uninstallerwhich is the best video card driver uninstaller utility that removes every trace of the older video driver including its registry.

The most common causes of GPU heating are:. Overclocking — If you have overclocked your graphics card beyond its limit, then most likely the GPU cooler is not able to keep up with the temperature. Eventually, the GPU will definitely get overheated and throttle down to lower clock speeds to avoid any kind of damage to itself. So, reduce or disable the overclock and keep the temperature under safe working levels, as specified by the GPU manufacturer.

Also, bad or worn out thermal paste does result in overheating too. So, here you have to take out the heatsink and apply good quality thermal paste, and then securely tighten the heatsink over the GPU. Higher Case Temperature — If your case has bad airflow then you have higher case temperature and thus higher temperature of other components including graphics card.

So, my advice here is to install at least one intake fan and one exhaust case fan to improve airflow. Good airflow will decrease the temperature of your graphics card and prevents it from overheating. The only way to fix this issue to replace the graphics card fan with a new one. You can check out the guide below on how to find a replacement fan for your graphics card model.Menu Menu. Search Everywhere Threads This forum This thread. Search titles only. The point is that your results from overclocking will be specific to your machine and your card. Perusing the results before continuing can only be helpful. So before you do any overclocking, run your benchmark tool to get a baseline reading. I used three different benchmarks for my tests, so on my stock GTX before any changes in the Afterburner app, the results were thus:. Changing either of these values can make your GPU, and your computer at a whole, unstable. The goal is to gently raise the clock speed and voltage until you run into stability issues, then pull back and settle on a stable maximum.

Make a note of the stock settings here a screenshot can be handy. Change the clock speed first. Raise it by 10 to 20 MHz, then apply the setting with the check mark button. If everything went smoothly, bump the clock up again and re-run the benchmark. This is the result of an unstable overclock. Boost it by 5mV and run the benchmark again—hopefully, you should find that those artifacts and crashes go away, and things are stable again. Keep repeating this process, bumping 10MHz to the core clock until you see spots or crashing benchmarks, bump up 5mV milivolts to the processor, run the benchmark again and see if it becomes stable.

Rinse and repeat. Keep an eye on your temperatures—Heaven is particularly useful for this, since it displays the GPU clock speed and temperature by default.

How to Overclock Your GPU for More Gaming and Multimedia Performance

This is your final overclock. My benchmark values ended up at:. I probably could have boosted things even further with a little more tinkering, or a better cooling hardware setup and a willingness to bump up the heat tolerances.

How to get more FPS without overclocking!

The same general process applies, though: small bumps, test, repeat, fall back when you lose stability. Your GPU will automatically increase or decrease the speed of its cooling fans its temperature sensors detect the need to do so. This is also useful if you run into any issues further down the line. Once you start playing actual games, make a note of any crashes—different games will react differently to the overclock. What does "Power Limit (%)" do in MSI Afterburner?

View More Photo Galleries. Unread PMs. Essentials Only Full Version. New Member. This is my first post so please bare with me. I recently noticed that i've been getting some fps drops between s then 60 when i'm playing on pubg with all settings ultra on a p G-sync Dell monitor. I'm new to the nature of overclocking a GPU so I decided to go to youtube since I can follow along with videos and I came across this youtuber by the name of Jay2cents.

I notice he mention about reaching power limit of 1 and how that can throttle my performance. I have attached an image showing some information about the test. Final Note: If I'm not providing any information or my post is just utterly cancer, please don't think i'm trolling or any of that. I legitimately need help with these questions.

Please let me know any other information I can provide to make this a better experience all around. Insert Custom Title Here. I am assuming that you have the basic reference design since you didn't say otherwise and since you are hitting the power limit by default. Hitting the power limit is very common with these cards. That will raise the power limit from to watts. You will probably still keep hitting the power limit, but you will be able to keep a higher boost before hitting the power limit, at least.

Do not increase voltage at all. Increasing voltage rarely has much affect on these cards and will only cause you to hit the power limit more often. Cool GTX.
